About Us

In 2009, Kids' Meals delivered 297,695 lunches with a staff of seven and with the help of over 6,000 volunteers! Thank you for your support in the fight against childhood hunger.

The first meals on wheels program for children started in 1984. The program was started with one location in North Houston. A second location in East Houston was acquired in 2006. In 2008, Kids' Meals was infused with a new energetic and actively involved Board of Directors that is fulfilling our mission of ending hunger among Houston area children living in poverty. In 2009, Kids' Meals brought on two new staff members and served over 297,000 lunches to hungry children in Houston.

Kids's Meals delivers to 1,200 pre-school aged children, living in poverty who are in need of food.  Kids Meals delivers nutritious meals directly to the homes of these hungry children, Monday through Friday, year-round. The lunches are free of cost to each family. We deliver lunches out of 2 locations. They are located inside two Neighborhood Centers (Independence Heights and East Houston, Ripley House).

Following is a list of additional services that complement our meals on wheels program.  These other services serve to assist the families in breaking the cycle of poverty.

  • Delivery of bags of groceries to families which include fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Delivery of Thanksgiving turkey baskets.
  • Hosting Christmas parties and toy giveaways.
  • Taking the kids on outings to the Houston Rockets, Houston Dynamos, Mitzvah Day, Nutcracker Ballet, and the Children’s Museum.
  • Providing school supplies they need when starting school.
  • Provide family resource referrals to assist with needs such as GEDs, medical, counseling, meal planning, and budget planning.

Vision and futureMother and Child

The need for Kids' Meals is ever-growing due to the increase of food and gas prices as well as the slowing economy. Layoffs and downsizing have more families finding themselves in need of food. Kids' Meals has hundreds of children on their waiting list ready to be fed. We hope to be the first city to have no hungry children.
