A Helping Hand for Hungry Kids

A local non-profit is feeling the economy's pinch, as more and more people are asking for help feeding their kids.

One local non-profit is serving up lunch to over 1,000 kids 5 days a week.

Kids' Meals staff and volunteers prepare bagged lunches in the morning.

Lunches are dropped off to families in low-income neighborhoods in Houston's North and East sides of town.

Currently approximately 1200 preschool aged kids receive a bagged lunch from Kids' Meals. There is a waiting list to receive the meals.

"The only meal that some of these kids get is the one we deliver to them." said Executive Associate Director of Kids' Meals Ruth Burrell.

"It helps me feed the kids during the day and they come everyday throughout the week." said six Celeste Guerrero. Guerrero has six children.

The meals cost the non-profit approximately $1.50 per child.

It costs the program more than $26 thousand dollars a month to prepare and deliver meals.

Kids' Meals was established in 2006.
