Hunger is uneasy or painful sensation caused by the lack of food. The mental and physical changes that accompany inadequate food intakes can have harmful effects on learning, development, productivity, physical and psychological health, and family life.
Food insecurity is a condition in which people lack basic food intake to provide them with the energy and nutrients for fully productive lives.
A food bank is a non-profit organization that solicits, recieves, inventories and distributes food stuffs donated by farmers and food processing companies, food drives, grocery stores, ect... to charitable organizations or non-profit agencies from warehouses. These food items are typically non-perishable goods, meat and fresh produce passed to non-profit welfare agencies such as food pantries, emergency kitchens, churches, and Kids' Meals.
Kids' Meals is not a pantry or a food bank.
Kids' Meals provides healthy nutritious lunches to each child. There are three parts to each lunch: juice, sandwhich, snack.
Kids' Meals does purchase some of the food for the lunches. Food is also donated from local groceries stores, restaurants, temples, schools, churches, and other organizations.
The food is delivered to children age five and under. During the summers and holidays (when children are out of school), Kids' Meals will feed the siblings that are in the home as well. When donations/supplies are avaliable, Kids' Meals also delivers groceries, fresh fruits and vegatables, bread and other supplies as needed to each family.
Kids' Meals is not a pantry service.
Kids' Meals serves around 1,200 children each day, Monday through Friday, year round. During the summer and holiday months, Kids' Meals feeds all of the siblings in the house as well as the 1,200 children they all ready feed.
During the Summer of 2009, Kids' Meals was serving an average of 1,400 children a day.
The current number of households that recieve assistance from Kids' Meals is 357. Due to the slowing economy, Kids' Meals currently has a growing waiting list of clients seeking food and help.
In 2008, Kids' Meals servied 260,000 children. The goal for 2009, is 300,000 children.
Kids' Meals has many possibilities for volunteers and donors.
If a volunteer can hold a crayon, they can volunteer with us! Small children can come and decorate bags for the lunches to go in. It is so important for children to know they can make a difference in their community.
You can volunteer either on site at 205 W. Crosstimber St. or at another establishment (church, temple, school, ect...) by making sandwiches and/or lunches.
- You can go out on a route with or without a driver and delivery food to the children.
